Kevin Merchant Photography New - 2021

Happy New Year everyone. Most of the usual traditions have been observed - cards and letters have been sent, calendars have been designed but not printed or handed out, egg nog has been consumed, Christmas decorations were put up and now put away and the tree has been deposited outside in the rain.

What has now become a continuing annual theme of catching up continues. Some of the reasons are good and the others I would rather not discuss (See the last entry of NEWS 2020). In spite of the many challenges of 2020, it was a very busy year for me - many backyard bird shoots from the blind and many trips for bluebirds. I have also embarked on investing in gear to do some high-speed hummingbird photography. Gear acquisition has almost been completed and now I wait for the right weather days to continue the education process.

I have also stepped into the world of mirrorless cameras with the recent acquisition of Canon's 2020 release of the full-frame R5. I have yet to even put the battery in the camera, forcing myself to do some reading in the voluminous, 920 page PDF version of the Advanced User Guide (there is no printed version). There are so many features to learn about, it would be a mistake to just run out and start shooting. Although, that is what I would really like to do! I have already learned this will be well worth the investment.
